Ingredients

750 ml milk
4 tbsp cocoa powder
125 g sugar
4 large eggs, beaten
12 slice(s) white bread, crusts removed if hard
300 g chopped prunes
  For the topping:
  dried dates or figs, or a banana and glacé cherries for topping
  icing sugar to decorate

Method

Preparation time: ca. 20 min / Grade of difficulty: medium / Calories per portion: n/a

Place the sugar, milk and cocoa into a saucepan and heat gently until the sugar and cocoa have dissolved. Stir occasionally.

Soak 3 slices of bread in the hot mixture and transfer immediately to a greased baking dish - a small casserole will do. Add a layer of prunes, about 1/3 of the total. repeat with the remaining bread and prunes, finishing with a layer of bread.

Whisk the eggs into the remaining milk mixture and pour over the top. Add desired topping and bake for 10-15 minutes until golden brown.

Sprinkle with icing sugar. Caramelise under the grill or with a gas torch and serve hot.
