Hi Alexia,
this is very much like my wife's recipe, which contained suet originally. She found out it could be replaced by margerine, as suet ist not easily available here (we disliked the thought anyway).
In twist-off jars it will keep - tested - up to 2 years, the recipe talks about even longer.
My questions:
- without any fat at all, and comparatively low alcoholic content, will it also keep for such a long time?
- do you use it straight away, or allow the mixture to mature, and if so, for how long?
Thx 'n cheers, Che

Hi Che,

I have only ever used it straight away or kept it for 1 or 2 days. So I am afraid I don't have a precise answer.

But I doubt it will keep for that long and many people only really use it at Christmas time and make fresh mincemeat every year.

Hi Alexia,
As I'm not from the UK, what do you use mincemeat for?
Thanks

Hi Sara,

Mincemeat is a mixture of chopped dried fruit, some rum or brandy and spices, and sometimes beef suet. Originally, mincemeat always contained meat.

It is mainly used for Mince Pies or also called Mincemeat Pies prepared at Christmas.

You can find a picture and a more in depth explanation also on wikipedia.

They are quite a specialty over the festive days and at the same time they have a long tradition and are kind of a classic.
