There is a huge "todo" in the UK at the moment over large quantities of ready meals (yuk!) which have been sold claiming to be beef although analysis shows they can be up to 100% Horsemeat. The real issue is one of labelling and traceability, since EU rules are supposed to ensure that all meat can be followed back to its source farm, and even if the horsemeat is safe, what has happened in the food chain, for this to happen?

Apparently it has been traced back to a horsemeat trader in Transylvania, who sold it to a meat trader in Holland who sold it to a company in Spain, who sold it to a ready-meals producer in France and an Irish Company who sold the meals to the biggest UK Supermarkets such as Tesco, Asda, Iceland, Lidl etc, resulting in them all having to withdraw the products from the market.

It is strange the taboos on eating different types of meat! Still we are not into eating mealworm burgers yet......

Anybody got any good horse recipes?

A.

Androcles, I don't wish to eat horse meat. I know it's perhaps hypocritical as I eat almost all other sorts of meat.

I accept that many people like it. But what I can't accept is that they, whoever they are, cheat people by claiming it's beef when it's horsemeat. That is unacceptable. Apparently they've started it in a big way in Spain as well.

I heard it too this morning on the radio.

Whenever I hear such news, together with that horrible atomic bomb test in North Korea I wish to live somwhere where there is no technology, no war, no supermarkets etc so that I grow my own food, build my own house and live by the sea just watching the waves. Wanting the simple life. Instead there is hate, stupidity and corrupt behaviour ruling this planet.

Well I am not really into horse meat. I am not really disgusted by the fact of eating a horse. I have tried it a few times and simply think it is not as good as beef, pork etc.

But if you think about consequences. Someone might eat it despite being allergic to it. Also, what kind of failing test system do the authorities use? If they don´t even know what kind of meat is sold how can I be sure that it is not old, rotten or poisonous in some other kind of way?
I am quite shocked and thinking about not eating meat for a while now.

This affair confirms me in my habit not to buy convenience food and to buy meat at the butcher's and not from the discounter.

It is clear from yesterday's EU meeting that this is not just a UK problem with dodgy processed food all over Europe, with sources of the raw meat as well as the processing done in a number of countries.

You are right about using your proper Butcher Heidi, although our village Butcher tells me that the next person who goes into his shop and asks for Donkey Burgers ...........

However I did laugh at today's cartoons in the newspaper for Valentine's Day laughing out loudlaughing out loud

and on Old Macdonald's Farm

Best wishes

Heidi,

Look at the contents of the syringe in the Old Macdonald's Farm cartoon - it is a drug used on Horses which is dangerous for Humans

see Phenylbutazone

Ah - thank you! And already they tell us, that the horsemeat in the Lasagna is not only disgusting but also unhealthy - the Valentine's day cartoon is dead-on.

This morning on the German TV news the announced that they have found the horse meat in the Lasagne of the Chain store REAL.
It is incredible and criminal that they can think they can get away with it and make money out of convenience food that is not the healthiest of options in the first place.

Hello,

recently I heard on TV why there is so much horsemeat on the market in Romania: The government there banned horse and carts from the streets. Unbelievable!
