Hi all,

Am new to the forum and looking for some advice.

I am baking a cake for a birthday and am looking to make a baseball cap cake. I have bought a hemisphere 'half ball' cake tin (measures 8x4).

Has anyone used these before? I am wondering what quantities of ingredients I should use?

Many thanks for any help you can give :))

Hi Linzi,

Welcome to CU.

The best thing to do is to first work out the volume of the tin.

Presumably the diameter is 8 inches, so the radius is 4 inches in which case the volume of a sphere is 4/3 pi x the cube of the radius, i.e 4/3 x 3.142 x 4 cubed = 4/3 x 3.142 x 64 = 268 cubic inches approx. As it is a hemisphere, the volume is 134 cubic inches.

All you then need to do is find your cake recipe, which usually has the tin size specified, work out the volume of that tin, for example it might be a 9 inch tin, filled to a depth of 2.5 inches which would give a volume of 3.142 x 4.5 squared x 2.5 = 159 cubic inches approx.

So your ingredients will be 134/159 = 85% of what is in the recipe.

Good luck,

A.
